Croatian Hawk exhibition at Vukomerec Primary School and workshop at Trnava days organized by the Croatian Sports Museum

09. 05. 2022. - 18. 05. 2022.
11:00 - 19:00

An exhibition dedicated to the Croatian Hawk, a physical exercise society founded in 1874 which, by the beginning of World War 1 gathered 180 smaller societies and over 20.000 members, was set up as part of a cooperative effort of the Croatian Sports Museum, Vukomerec Primary School and the Trnava Recreative Sports Society inside Zagreb’s „Vukomerec“ Primary School, No 7c Porečka Street.
The Croatian Hawk was the largest physical exercise, sports and social movement in Croatia. Physical exercise was its founding activity, but the reasons for the society’s establishment and its goals were both political and ideological: a fight against germanization and magyarization, the development and preservation of national consciousness and the promotion of Croatia’s position within the confines of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and, later on, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The first sports club emerged from the Croatian Hawk and the movement produced Franjo Bučar, the father of Croatian Sports.
The exhibition opens on Monday, May 9th 2022 at 11.00, and can be visited during the school’s working hours, from 8.00 to 19.00 until May 13th 2022.

A workshop is to be held as part of the Trnava Days at the Trnava sports society field on Friday May 13th 2022 at 16.30. Titled Bučar’s games for societies and schools, it is to be organized by the Croatian Sports Museum. Following in the footsteps of Croatia’s most famous sports teacher Franjo Bučar, the workshop will familiarize attendees with the beginnings of physical education in schools. This lecture will be followed by activities intended to take attendees “into the past”. The activities are a combination of individual and group exercises integrating long forgotten games. This fun interaction should give attendees a new insight into physical education, motivate them towards physical exercise and demonstrate the human need for movement and play. The workshop will bring to life a part of our history and the development of physical culture.
The program is led by Marijan Sutlović, curator of the Croatian Sports Museum.
The program is intended for children and adults between the ages of 6 and 99.

We look forward to seeing you!
